Robotic surgery for prostate cancer at MercyAscot
Patients needing radical prostatectomy and other delicate surgery in New Zealand will soon have access to the latest technology: a minimally invasive surgical robot at Ascot Hospital in Auckland. Following a recent evaluation MercyAscot today announced it has invested in the da Vinci Surgical System from Device Technologies, a robotic platform that allows a surgeon to control robotic arms from a console and operate through tiny incisions.
Dr Andrew Wong, CEO MercyAscot says the results achieved with this type of surgery include less pain, shorter hospital stay and faster recovery. “It provides a further surgical option that specialists working at MercyAscot can offer patients” he said.
New Zealanders seeking this state of the art technology will no longer have to travel overseas to receive treatment. Mr Mike Mackey and Mr Chris Hawke are the first two local Urologists who have trained in America on the da Vinci System and are now able to offer this surgical option to their patients.“We believe that robotic prostatectomy will be a significant advance in the management of prostate cancer for New Zealand men” said Mr Mackey and Mr Hawke. The da Vinci system will also available for gynaecological surgeries such as hysterectomies. Once gynaecologists have undergone training they will also be able to offer robotic surgery as an option to their patients.
